Beyond the Threat: How to Tip the Balance Toward Safety in Schools while Considering the Needs and Challenges of Individual Students:
Speaker: Nancy Rappaport, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School
October 2, 16, November 6,13, December 4, 2020
Special Guest: Sarah Goodrum, Ph.D.
Dr. Goodrum is Research Associate with the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado Boulder. Sarah is a sociologist with an emphasis in criminology, and she conducts research on domestic violence, homicide and school violence. In 2016, Sarah co-authored a report on a 2013 school shooting, and the findings from that report are currently being used to develop lessons learned on information sharing and threat assessment for three federally funded projects on school safety.
Dr. Nancy Rappaport will deepen our understanding of how to respond to students with threatening behavior in substantial ways. She’ll also help us explore the necessary cultural changes we need to make in order to effectively support students and keep our communities safe and connected. Several guest speakers will be joining Dr. Rappaport for this journey “beyond the threat.”
Attendees must participate in each of the 5 two-hour webinar sessions and will receive 10 PDPs upon successful completion of the 10-Hour webinar. PDP and CEU forms are available on the page of the last session of the 10 hour webinar.
MPY webinars are available to ONLY current employees of member districts and organizations. Public school memberships include police and fire personnel. Former and retired employees, members of committees including but not limited to PTO/PTA, PAC, School Improvement Councils, Health Councils, Drug/Alcohol Councils and school volunteers are not considered MPY members.

PDPs certificates will be issued at the end of the school year for all MPY webinars an individual attends during this school year. PDPs can only be issued to participants who have attended the webinars and submitted the appropriate paperwork. PDP certificates will be emailed to attendees.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for clinical staff, upon approval from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). CEUs are no longer available through the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association, Inc. (MaMHCA). Approval is granted by the NASW for each event.
