Student Needs: Providing Safe and Supportive Learning for All Students - Session 4 of 5

Webinar Description
This 5-session webinar covers the most common issues educators face in addressing the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students as they develop. Three major areas will be discussed: anxiety, executive functioning, and social skills, and how these difficulties affect students. The webinar presents a comprehensive format to identify student needs, review methods to evaluate and address student needs, satisfy regulatory requirements, and use the strategies presented when working with students.  Case studies will review these strategies and the issues facing students.

  • Session 1 (January 7, 2022): Student Needs—introduction and review of two major models of thinking to understand student learning and social development as well as review of, RTI, special education expectations, and our roles as educators, administrators, and parents.
  • Session 2 (January 28, 2022): Executive Functioning—how it develops, how it affects learning and behavior, especially anxiety. 
  • Session 3 (March 8, 2022): Anxiety—how anxiety differs from normal worries and how it affects learning and behavior, especially executive functioning. 
  • Session 4 (March 29, 2022): Social Skills—how they develop and the differences between students who are “neurotypical” vs. students suspected or identified as having ASD. 
  • Session 5 (April 26, 2022): Case studies—integrating all that has been covered through the review of case studies, shared in both narrative and video formats.

Attendees must register for and participate in all 5 webinar sessions. A code will be given out during each session for accountability purposes. Please hold onto the codes- you will enter them into one PDP and/or CEU form, which are available on the Request Forms page on MPY's website. PDPs and CEUs will only be awarded to participants who attend all 5 sessions. Forms must be completed within 8 days of the 5th session.

About the Speaker
David Gotthelf, Ph.D., NCSP, is a licensed psychologist provider as well as a licensed school psychologist and special education administrator. He has had over 35 years experience working in school and clinical settings. He has served as the program manager for teens and young adults with ASD at MGH’s Aspire Program, and he currently has private practice where he provides therapy as well as evaluation services.  An adjunct professor at Boston and Northeastern Universities, he also serves as a clinical supervisor for a mental health clinic in the Boston area.

Membership Information
Most MPY webinars are available to ONLY current staff from member districts and organizations. Public school memberships include police and fire personnel. Former and retired employees and members of committees, including but not limited to, PTO/PTA, PAC, School Improvement Councils, Health Councils, Drug/Alcohol Councils, and school volunteers, are not considered MPY members.

PDPs and CEUs
MPY is an approved Professional Development Provider through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (F20180079 provider number). Professional Development Points (PDPs) are offered for all MPY professional development webinars. PDPs are issued for a minimum of 10 hours of training.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for clinical staff from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association, Inc. (MaMHCA). The NASW and the MaMHCA approves each event. Event participants may request CEUs by filling out the request form above. 

Requests for PDPs and CEUs must be submitted within 8 days of the webinar. PDPs and CEUs will only be issued to participants who have attended the webinar(s) and submitted the appropriate paperwork within 8 days of the webinar, with accurate accountability codes. 

PDP and CEU certificates will be emailed to attendees at the end of the school year.
