In a nourishing, in person event, join our facilitators as we model a variety of practices in building safe and supportive environments amid the mental health wave of post COVID times. Motivational interviewing techniques, ACEs, and how trauma impacts the brain are components of this conference along with real time practices that will bolster individual and collective wellbeing and take a public health approach to meeting the mental health needs of our student body.
About the Speakers
State Senator Jason Lewis proudly represents the people of the Fifth Middlesex District of Massachusetts, which includes the cities and towns of Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and parts of Winchester. First elected to the Senate in 2014, he has delivered results for his district and been a progressive leader for the Commonwealth. Senator Lewis has long championed educational equity and led the effort to pass the Student Opportunity Act in 2019, landmark legislation to ensure that every child in Massachusetts has access to a high quality public education. Senator Lewis also led the effort in 2018 to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour and to create a new universal paid family and medical leave program. He was recognized for this achievement by being named an Honorable Mention for the 2018 Bostonians of the Year by the Boston Globe. Senator Lewis is a member of Senate President Karen Spilka’s leadership team. He serves as the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Education, the Assistant Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and the Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Reimagining Massachusetts: Post-Pandemic Resiliency. He also co-founded and co-chairs the legislature’s Prevention for Health Caucus and Zero Waste Caucus.
Sara Burd, M.A., R.D.T., currently serves as the Director of Social Emotional Learning and Counseling for the Arlington Public Schools in Massachusetts. She is a school counselor, social worker and Registered Drama Therapist with experience in urban and suburban settings across the state. Sara is a long time artist, actor, writer, and singer who you may have seen on stage or screen. She adores her children and husband, Shakespeare, ballet, and sailing and spent the pandemic growing an indoor jungle of house plants.
Michelle Lipinski, M.Ed., Principal of Northshore Recovery High School, Northshore Education Consortium, is licensed as a Science Teacher, Principal/Director, Superintendent, and has served as a School Board Member. Michelle is currently a City Councilor in Dover, NH. With over 25 years of experience as a Principal/Director in alternative school settings, Michelle is a Recovery Advocate and continues to search for ways to solve the addiction and opioid epidemic locally and nationally. Michelle speaks around the country about the philosophy and mission of creating adolescent substance use and mental health recovery supports in academic settings. She is also a strong advocate for combining a supportive therapeutic milieu with rigorous academic standards. Michelle has played a leadership role in helping her staff develop authentic performance assessments and upholding high academic standards for students with significant risk factors. Due to her unique perspective on these issues, Michelle and her students have been featured on ABC, CNN, NBC, NECN, Anderson Cooper and Current TV as well as other media outlets across the country. Patrick Tutwiler, Ph.D., is in his fourth year as the Superintendent of the Lynn Public Schools. He joined the Lynn Public Schools in July 2015 as Deputy Superintendent, leaving his position as Headmaster of Brighton High School in Boston. Prior to the position at Brighton High School, he was the principal of Wayland High School. He began his career in education as a history teacher at Brighton High School in Boston. Dr. Tutwiler earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from The College of the Holy Cross, a Master of Education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. With respect to his role as Superintendent, he operates according to a set of core values easily captured in the following statement: as an educational leaders, we must love the student, the teacher, and the craft of teaching, none more than the other, but in that order.
Most MPY webinars are available to ONLY current staff from member districts and organizations. Public school memberships include police and fire personnel. Former and retired employees and members of committees, including but not limited to, PTO/PTA, PAC, School Improvement Councils, Health Councils, Drug/Alcohol Councils, and school volunteers, are not considered MPY members.
PDPs and CEUs
MPY is an approved Professional Development Provider through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (F20180079 provider number). Professional Development Points (PDPs) are offered for all MPY professional development webinars. PDPs are issued for a minimum of 10 hours of training.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for clinical staff from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association, Inc. (MaMHCA). The NASW and the MaMHCA approves each event. Event participants may request CEUs by filling out the request form above.
Requests for PDPs and CEUs must be submitted within 8 days of the webinar. PDPs and CEUs will only be issued to participants who have attended the webinar(s) and submitted the appropriate paperwork within 8 days of the webinar, with accurate accountability codes.
PDP and CEU certificates will be emailed to attendees at the end of the school year.
