Description
Transition planning should prepare students not only to leave school, but to build meaningful adult lives. Yet many educational and behavioral programs continue to prioritize isolated academic or behavioral goals without adequately addressing the broader skills associated with long-term quality of life outcomes. This presentation explores how schools, providers, and families can begin developing meaningful, future-oriented goals as early as age 14 that support employment, independent living, social connection, self-determination, and emotional well-being.
Grounded in current transition research, behavior analytic principles, and practical experiences from community-based transition programming, presenters will discuss the importance of balancing clinical outcomes (“What skills did I learn?”) with applied outcomes (“Can I use these skills in real life?”) and quality of life outcomes (“Has my life improved because of these skills?”). Participants will examine how foundational capacities such as self-regulation, flexibility, executive functioning, communication, problem solving, and relationship development influence adult readiness and long-term success.
The presentation will provide actionable strategies for designing socially meaningful goals that generalize beyond the classroom into real-world environments, helping neurodivergent students move toward lives that include purpose, connection, independence, and hope for the future.
About the Speakers
As the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Run the Gamut, Stefanie Mitchell, MS, BCBA, LABA, (she/her) brings over 24 years of experience working with individuals with autism. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Developmental Disabilities and Human Services from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, followed by a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Northeastern University.
Throughout her career, Stefanie has been dedicated to advancing autism services. She spent 15 years leading the business and clinical operations of a Boston-based agency specializing in services for children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder. In addition to her leadership experience, she has served as a recurring guest lecturer at Boston College, an instructor at Simmons University, and a reviewer for the National Standards Project at the National Autism Center.
A licensed behavior analyst, Stefanie is passionate about research and has presented and published work in both the autism and behavior analysis fields. She is deeply committed to improving access to high-quality, evidence-based services and making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with autism and their families.
Jennifer Magnuson, M.S., BCBA, LABA, (she/her) is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. She currently serves as Chief of Staff at Run the Gamut (RTG), a nonprofit that supports young adults with autism in their transition to adulthood.
Jen has held leadership roles across residential, educational, and community settings, with a strong focus on ethical, inclusive, and evidence-based practices. Her recent work explores how behavior analysts can responsibly integrate emerging technologies into their practice. In her presentation, Efficiency Meets Ethics: How BCBAs Can Responsibly Leverage AI Tools, Jen offers practical strategies for enhancing efficiency through AI while maintaining professional integrity and person-centered values.
