Behavior analysts entering public school settings often find that clinical competence alone doesn’t guarantee effective collaboration with Individualized Education Plan (IEP) teams. This session examines the cultural, linguistic, and structural barriers that separate BCBAs from the special educators, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and school psychologists they work alongside — drawing on decades of field research demonstrating that technical jargon, professional silos, and unclear scope-of-practice boundaries can undermine well-designed behavior support plans and IEP objectives. Attendees will explore how ethical codes across disciplines, though differently worded, converge on shared values that can anchor genuine teamwork. The session closes with practical strategies BCBAs can use to build contextual fit, communicate across disciplinary lines, and function as trusted partners — rather than outside specialists — within the public school IEP process.
This program is open to all MPY members. PDPs and CEUs are not being offered. BCBAs are eligible to receive CEs through LSGurdin Consulting.

About the Speakers
Dr. Shawn Kenyon, BCBA-D
Dr. Shawn Kenyon, BCBA-D, (he/him) has been in the fields of Applied Behavior Analysis and Special Education since 1995. Throughout his career he has been a Program and Clinical Director in private schools as well as public schools and non-public special education schools in Massachusetts and California while also working and consulting nationally across several states and internationally in Brazil. In his current position, he directs behavioral services in the special education department for a large public school district in southern California.
Dr. Kenyon is the founder and owner of a small behavioral consulting company, also located in southern California. He has been an instructor in the graduate program in Applied Behavior Analysis at Northeastern University, located in Boston, Massachusetts, since 2007. Dr. Kenyon has also held faculty positions at Simmons University and Endicott College, both also located in Massachusetts and he currently serves as a reviewer for the journal Behavior Analysis in Practice.
