Description
Reactive approaches to professional ethics are insufficient for the complexity of situations that behavior analysts encounter when navigating multiple relationships in applied settings. Multiple relationships — spanning clients, caregivers, supervisees, colleagues, and organizations — emerge frequently and often simultaneously, creating competing demands, blurred boundaries, and unforeseen challenges that require more than isolated decision-making. This presentation introduces a structured framework for proactively identifying and managing the ethical complexities that arise when professional roles and relationships intersect. Through guided exercises and discussion, attendees will practice recognizing the risks and red flags specific to multiple relationships, identifying antecedent strategies to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries, and engaging in candid conversations about the gray areas practitioners face daily. Based on professional ethics requirements and embedded within supervisory and daily practice, this framework supports behavior analysts in developing a durable, proactive ethical repertoire.
About the SpeakerS
Sarah Lichtenberger (she/her) earned a B.A. in English and Psychology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the Neurobehavioral Unit Outpatient Clinic. She has 10 years of clinical experience, specifically with a focus on early intervention and severe interfering behavior. She has held positions as a senior clinician at Trumpet Behavior Health, as the Director of Clinical Standards at Verbal Beginnings, and as the Ethics Education Manager and Assistant Director of Ethics at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board®. She is currently the Director of Process and Knowledge for BehaviorLive/OkWhen. She has been a guest reviewer for Behavior Analysis in Practice and is an Ethics Subject Matter Expert for the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA). She has served as a director on the Colorado Association for Behavior Analysis (COABA) board and as the co-chair of the Professional Development Committee (PDC).
Tyra Sellers (she/her) is the owner of TP Sellers, LLC Consulting and Scholar-in-Residence at Pass the Big ABA Exam (PTB). She earned a B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. in Special Education from San Francisco State University, a J.D. from the University of San Francisco, a Ph.D. from Utah State University, and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst®. Her professional and research interests focus on professional ethics, training and supervision, assessment and treatment of severe problem behavior, and variability. Dr. Sellers has over 30 years of clinical experience working with individuals with disabilities in a wide variety of settings. She has held positions as an Assistant Professor at Utah State University, Director of Ethics at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board®, and CEO of the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts(APBA). She carries out reviews for several journals, has published several journal articles, four co-authored book chapters, co-authored books focused on supervision and mentorship and applied ethics for behavior analysis, and a workbook pair for consulting and new supervisors. She’s been a vegetarian for 40 years, she loves flowers, she thinks Twizzlers should be uninvented, and she hopes you know how amazing you are!
