Behavioral interventions targeting symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) emphasize the development of functional alternatives to maladaptive behaviors, guided primarily by principles of reinforcement and the identification of behavioral functions. These interventions focus on modifying antecedents and consequences to decrease symptoms and promote adaptive responses. Contemporary empirical evidence indicates that ADHD fundamentally constitutes a disorder of performance—specifically, the inconsistent application of intact skills—rather than a deficiency in motivation or skill acquisition per se. This conceptualization aligns with neurobehavioral research demonstrating that ADHD symptomatology is closely associated with executive function impairments like the regulation of attention and sustained task engagement. Practitioners of ABA are thus positioned to enhance the efficacy of their interventions by integrating evidence-informed strategies that scaffold executive function processes alongside traditional function-based approaches. This integration requires leveraging knowledge about the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD. Throughout this training, the presenter will emphasize the dynamic interplay between antecedents, behaviors, and consequences while incorporating strategies to bolster executive functioning, thus promoting improved clinical outcomes.

Dr. Lina Slim (she/her) is a dually certified SLP and BCBA-D with over 38 years-experience, specializing her clinical practice on supporting families and their children with autism, neurodevelopmental and behavioral challenges, speech and language differences and apraxia, providing training, supervision, and consultations to practitioners across professional disciplines, cultures, and countries. Her clinical and research interests focus on disseminating best practices in the application of the science of behavior analysis to support persons with autism and their families, establishing and maintaining effective functional verbal behaviors while promoting Interprofessional Culturally Aware, Responsive and Person-Centered Collaborative Practices (AICARe-Collaboration).
