Description

Join us for an insightful session focused on helping school BCBAs shift teams away from traditional compliance-driven approaches to more collaborative and engagement-oriented strategies throughout the school day. Historically, behavioral programs have included interventions that evoke and reinforce compliance. We have learned that this approach, however, can cause distress, avoidance, and negative opinions of our field. Fortunately, the conversation has moved towards designing compassionate interventions that are assent-based, kind, and supportive. This approach fosters an environment where students and staff actively engage with each other, enhancing motivation and participation in the learning process. This approach can lead to improved student outcomes, enhanced relationships, and a positive school culture.

In this presentation, we will begin with a review of the research on assent-based, compassionate interventions and then discuss the challenges school BCBAs often face during the transition from compliance to engagement-based behavior plans. We will then offer practical solutions to effectively navigate these challenges to enhance rather than disrupt the collaborative behavior change process. Participants will leave with actionable strategies and tools to create a more engaging, positive, and supportive classroom environment for both staff and students.
