Tier 2/3 Practices for Becoming Restorative (Series Begins Mar. 5, 2026)

For this webinar series, participants will automatically be enrolled in all 5 sessions.

Speaker

Jess Madden-Fuoco, M.A., M.Ed.

Description

Tier 2/3 Practices for Becoming Restorative is an in depth discussion into how to use restorative approaches for repairing harm and strengthening relationships when something difficult has happened. We will learn two strategies and when to use each (restorative conversations and healing circles), and practice using the strategies with one another.

In this session, participants will deepen their understanding of what restorative practices are by reviewing the indigenous origins and values. Participants will also learn about how restorative practices can transform our view of and experience of conflict by focusing on needs and repair. Restorative conversations and healing circles will be introduced. This session will also consider the negative impacts of punitive discipline.

In this session, participants will learn about the practice of restorative conversations and how they can be used in the moment and also while sitting together. Participants will dissect the restorative questions and explore which phrasing and reflection sheets are appropriate for students of different ages and developmental levels. Participants will learn from two examples of restorative conversations – a mud-in-the face example and a donut theft example.

In this session, participants will learn how to prepare for and facilitate a healing circle. Participants will watch two videos of healing circles with students and families and analyze who participated, what questions were asked, and what facilitator decisions/moves were supportive. Participants will read a harm circle preparation checklist and share ways it can be adapted for students of different ages and developmental levels.

This session will explore healing circles more deeply. Using a shared scenario, participants will practice using the harm checklist and will plan for a healing circle. Participants will also identify challenges that can arise and ways to move forward on those challenges.  Participants will also identify potential challenges and strategies for moving forward.

This session will review what we’ve learned in the prior webinar sessions. We will watch a video of a re-entry circle to think about how circles can be used after a student has been out of school and is returning. We will also think about the possibilities and challenges of restorative conversations and healing circles in our own context.

About the Speaker

Jess Madden-Fuoco, M.A., M.Ed., started teaching in 1997 and was an assistant principal for 13 years and an instructional coach for four years. Jess is now a Restorative Practices Coach and English Teacher at an alternative school in the Boston Public Schools. Since 2012, Jess has been leading professional learning across the Boston Public Schools on teacher evaluation processes and restorative practices. Since she began working in schools, Jess was always concerned about school being too punitive and not helping young people learn from their mistakes, so she was grateful to learn about restorative justice in 2008. Jess began teaching educators about restorative justice in 2016; designed the fully online Becoming Restorative Course in 2022; and co-facilitated four courses this past spring for 93 educators and leaders from across the Boston Public Schools.  Jess loves to think about having a positive impact on more students by supporting the growth of all staff who work in schools.
