Description

Human beings face obstacles, challenges, and disappointments every day that lead to uncomfortable feelings. Our ability to bounce back or be resilient to these difficulties plays a large role in our ability to adapt and thrive in life. This webinar series will explore the factors that contribute to resilience and how it can be taught in the classroom to promote effective coping.

To receive PDPs and CEUs, participants must attend all 5 sessions and successfully pass a quiz following Session 5. Following the live webinar, registrants will be emailed a link to view the recorded webinar. The recording will be made available for 7 days after each session.

Life is stressful.  All humans will experience obstacles, misfortune, and the difficult emotions that come with it.  Our ability to learn, adapt, and bounce back from these inevitable challenges, defined as resilience, is incredibly important for our overall wellbeing and life success.  This session will define resilience and the internal and external variables that help build it.

Avoidance coping means engaging in a behavior that moves away from or dampens the emotional arousal related to a given event. This coping style is often seen in individuals experiencing emotional disorders. This session will discuss the role that avoidance coping plays in the classroom and school setting and explores systemic responses to address it.

Our students need to learn strategies to actively manage difficult emotions so that they do not shy away from challenges that may elicit discomfort. This session will focus on teaching cognitive or thinking strategies to students to support adaptive coping. Participants will both understand resilience thinking, and also how to embed these concepts into daily routines to help achieve skill generalization.

Our students need to learn strategies to actively manage difficult emotions so that they do not shy away from challenges that may elicit discomfort. This session will focus on teaching behavioral strategies to support adaptive coping. This includes proactive strategies to keep stress low as well as early reactive approaches to take “effective breaks” to allow a child to reset and reengage in a task.  In addition, participants will learn about supporting students to choose to engage in healthy experiences that elicit discomfort.
