John Doherty, Ed.D.

Description

The safety and well-being of our students is our number one priority in schools. All too often, however, students are placed in unsafe situations or have their civil rights compromised when schools do not follow laws, policies, and procedures to keep our students safe. In this series, we will discuss different areas of potential liability through the lens of an educator. Through case studies, scenarios, and practical experiences we will focus on how school districts and schools can put policies, training, and supervision in place that will minimize the risk of student injury, or a student being denied their civil rights.

To receive PDPs and CEUs, participants must attend all 5 sessions and successfully pass a quiz following Session 5. Following the live webinar, registrants will be emailed a link to view the recorded webinar. The recording will be made available for 7 days after each session.

Sessions 1 and 2 will focus on sexual harassment and abuse in our schools, both student on student and adult on student. We will discuss the importance of prevention strategies, such as staff hiring, staff and student training, and supervision of staff and students to minimize the risk of sexual harassment and abuse in our schools. We will also review current Title IX regulations and amendments and the importance of having trained individuals in the role of Title IX Coordinator conduct investigations after an incident occurred and provide proper supports to students both during and after the investigation.

In this session, we will look at the potential causes of school violence, including school shootings and how schools and districts can mitigate the risk of these types of incidents happening. We will also look at the use of student threat assessments as a powerful tool to support students who are in crisis.

In this session, we will review the rights of students in protected classes (Race, LGBTQIA, Students with Disabilities, etc.) and what is necessary to protect students through the lens of Section 504, Title IX, IDEA, Title VI, and Massachusetts State laws.

This session will examine the current challenges facing schools and districts including book banning, Artificial Intelligence, student speech, equity, athletics and more.
