Description

Over the last 25 years, the number of students diagnosed with ADHD has consistently increased, leading to larger numbers of identified students in our classrooms. This workshop series will provide a comprehensive understanding of the symptoms of ADHD and how they impact day to day functioning. Effective classroom strategies for increasing motivation, encouraging success, and managing behavioral responses, will be explored as well.

To receive PDPs and CEUs, participants must attend all 5 sessions, either live or recorded, and successfully pass a quiz following Session 5. If you are not eligible for PDPs and/or CEUs, you may request a Certificate of Attendance.

This session will review DSM-5 Criteria, new research on varying presentations, and the concept of ADHD as a spectrum disorder. Symptoms and impacts will be reorganized into a new way of understanding and viewing ADHD that allows for a strengths based, trauma-informed system of management.

ADHD is often accompanied by symptoms of depression and anxiety. This session will review these disorders, and explore their connection to ADHD. Ways to differentiate and better support motivation and engagement based on presentation will be explored.

Executive Functioning Skills are crucial for effective learning. This session will define these skills, and identify their role in the experience of ADHD. Finally, strategies to effectively support students in the development of EF skills will be presented.

Extreme emotional responses, difficulty controlling impulses, rejection sensitivity and recognition response euphoria are all common experiences for those with ADHD. These concepts will be defined and discussed, and strategies for management will be presented.

For those who experience symptoms of ADHD, sensory input can be helpful for regulation and control. It can also create extreme overwhelm and lead to meltdown. This session will explore the line between these two responses and identify ways to learn and use sensory preferences in classroom management procedures.
