Part 1 – Supporting Communication by Integrating a Language and Behavior-Based Approach

This talk will cover the fundamentals of language, speech, communication, communicative competence, framing communication development into behavioral terminology throughout.  We will review how these fundamentals can be integrated into communication programming within behavioral settings.  We will also review how these principles are woven into intervention strategies with complex learners, emergent learners, and minimally speaking / non-speaking individuals.

About the Speakers

Kate Grandbois, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCBA, LABA, (she/her) is both a Speech Language Pathologist and a Board Certificated Behavior Analyst with over 15 years of clinical experience working in private practice, outpatient clinics, outpatient hospital settings, and consulting to private schools and legal teams. She specializes in augmentative alternative communication, autism and associated disorders, language development, and integrating AAC into the educational/vocational programming of persons with behavioral needs. Her interests are multidisciplinary treatment, collaboration, mentorship, adult education, and implementation science. She is currently the owner and managing director of GTC Therapy, co-host of the SLP Nerdcast podcast, adjunct faculty at Fitchburg State University, has served as adjunct faculty at Northeastern University, and is the former president and cofounder of The Speech and Language Network, Inc. She has several peer reviewed publications related to management and evidence-based practices and regularly presents at the national level.

She is currently a doctoral student pursuing both a Ph.D. and an MBA at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette studying the intersections of business and evidence-based practices.

Abby Cummings, M.S,, CCC-SLP, (she/her) is a Speech Language Pathologist with 10 years of clinical experience working in early intervention, sub separate school-based programs, and private practice, providing both direct and consultative work to families and educational teams for autistic children and adults and their interdisciplinary team members. She specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), language development, and speech sound disorders, and integrating these skills within educational and vocational programming. She enjoys working directly with families, as well as team members, including but not limited to, behavior analysts, registered behavior technicians, educators, occupational and physical therapists, and more to enhance an individual’s communication skills and overall quality of life. She is currently the Clinic Director at GTC Therapy, and provides clinical supervision and support to SLPs, as well as education and outreach to our community partners.
