Speaker

Rebecca Markovitz, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LABA, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Description

For the past 20 years the prevalence of autism has increased drastically. The 2022 CDC report puts the prevalence at 1 in 31 children. Studies have found that up to 95% of individuals with an autism diagnosis have comorbid diagnoses such as ADD or ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD, etc. This means that the approximately 64,000 BCBAs whose primary area of practice is autism services, according to the BACB’s most recent certificate data, are likely working with clients who have multiple diagnoses, even if their training did not include coursework or supervised fieldwork related to those conditions. This webinar will address the importance of understanding how comorbidities can potentially affect the development of behavior change programs and provide some examples of how practitioners can take these factors into consideration when developing behavior change programs.

About the Speaker

Rebecca Markovitz, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LABA, (she/her) started her career in behavior analysis as an undergrad at Binghamton University working at the Institute for Child Development. She then moved on to Western Michigan University to earn her master’s degree in applied behavior analysis. After graduating from Western, Rebecca moved to Massachusetts where she developed her skills in working with clients with complex histories. She was a clinician and then assistant clinical director at a school and residential program for students up to the age of 22 with developmental, mental health, and behavioral diagnoses. During this time, she earned her doctoral degree in behavior analysis from Simmons University. Currently, Rebecca is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her focus is on the clinical and practical development of students in the Psychology Department’s undergraduate and graduate programs in behavior analysis. She hopes her students gain an appreciation for how wonderfully complex behavior is and the need to take into consideration environmental and biological factors, as well as private events, in our understanding of behavior.
