School nurses are often left out of the student evaluation process. Often, the school nurses possesses valuable student and community health data and perspectives that can contribute to supporting student health, overall success, and academic achievement. This session will aim to provide a holistic approach to ensure all members of the team can fully contribute to the student evaluation process when appropriate.

Parent and family engagement is a critical component of student overall success. Challenges in communication and other barriers can have negative effects on these important relationships. Learning how to overcome these barriers can improve communication and student outcomes. In this session, we will review tools, resources, and strategies that can facilitate family and caregiver engagement.

Schools are hubs of the community and quite often are expected to provide all of the resources students and staff need to be successful. Limited resources can be a barrier to being able to successfully provide all of the programs and services needed to support student success. Becoming familiar with community resources and forming partnerships can help school teams and districts with providing support for all students and families.

Medical and mental health emergencies occur daily in schools across the Commonwealth. Preparing school teams is critical to optimizing outcomes for the people who are impacted and for those who need to respond. We will discuss systems and policies that must be in place to improve emergency response, including the DESE mandated Medical and Behavioral Health Emergency Response Plans and other State and National resources, that will assist teams in mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies in schools.

A critical component of disaster recovery is debriefing. Often this part of the recovery process is missed because staff or administrators are busy or unsure of how to lead this process. We will discuss the importance of debriefing, the components that should be included, staff or others who should be at the table, and how to conduct a successful debriefing session and continue the process beyond an event.
