Speaker

Jess Madden-Fuoco, M.A., M.Ed.

Description

Webinar participants will learn how to develop both classroom and school-wide restorative routines and how to use weekly talking circles to build a strong foundation of Tier 1 practices. We will examine ways educators and schools can collaborate on creating and supporting these practices across classrooms.

In this session, participants will explore restorative practice’s indigenous roots and core values while examining how these practices can be integrated into schools. Through an asset-mapping activity, participants will identify restorative approaches already in use in their own settings, creating a foundation to strengthen and expand these practices.

In this session, participants will read about the Social Discipline Window and Carla Shalaby’s article, Are We Teaching Care or Control?, to think about how to foster both support and responsibility. Participants will also explore the Restorative Routines choice board and will choose two or three routines that they think would be helpful. For each routine, participants will reflect on how the routine can be used in their context. Participants will share ideas in the chat for other routines that can support their school in becoming more restorative.

In this session, participants will discover the power of weekly talking circles and explore circle plans along with the key elements that make them effective. They will review a rubric for designing strong circles and draft their own plan on a topic they believe would engage their students. In addition, participants will learn how different schools create time for weekly circles and consider how these practices could fit within their own school schedules.

This session will dive into “Becoming a more restorative school – questions to ask.” Participants will share ideas about ways they are already addressing each question and/or what ideas they hope to try in their school communities. Participants will also think about how restorative practices can be taught with SEL and anti-racism.

This session will review key learning from previous sessions and examine different ways schools can share responsibility for strengthening Tier 1 restorative practices. Participants will create a plan for beginning or deepening the collaboration for restorative practices in their own schools.

About the Speaker

Jess Madden-Fuoco, M.A., M.Ed., started teaching in 1997 and was an assistant principal for 13 years and an instructional coach for four years. Jess is now a Restorative Practices Coach and English Teacher at an alternative school in the Boston Public Schools. Since 2012, Jess has been leading professional learning across the Boston Public Schools on teacher evaluation processes and restorative practices. Since she began working in schools, Jess was always concerned about school being too punitive and not helping young people learn from their mistakes, so she was grateful to learn about restorative justice in 2008. Jess began teaching educators about restorative justice in 2016; designed the fully online Becoming Restorative Course in 2022; and co-facilitated four courses this past spring for 93 educators and leaders from across the Boston Public Schools.  Jess loves to think about having a positive impact on more students by supporting the growth of all staff who work in schools.
