Description

Severe disabilities is a  broad category encompassing students with significant physical, intellectual, and/or sensory impairments that limit their ability to learn and function independently. Students with severe disabilities, such as communication difficulties, physical limitations, and social-emotional needs, face unique challenges. We will discuss strategies for helping students with severe disabilities manage their emotions and behaviors. This webinar will explore ways to teach students with severe disabilities self-advocacy skills to express their needs and preferences. We will also review strategies and effective teaching practices utilizing multiple disciplines within the school setting.

To receive PDPs and CEUs, participants must attend all 5 sessions and successfully pass a quiz following Session 5. Following the live webinar, registrants will be emailed a link to view the recorded webinar. The recording will be made available for 7 days after each session.

This session will provide an overview of this unique population of students and how educators can work collaboratively to help them achieve their best possible outcomes. We will touch on the multiple disciplines that work together as well as the administrative challenges that can arise within a large program. Future sessions will provide detailed information from our Speech/Language pathologists, Social Workers, BCBAs, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and our vision services providers.

This session will focus on strategies to help students with severe disabilities and/or autism learn to manage their emotions and behavior. We will provide an overview of strategies and tools related to applied behavior analysis that can be used in the classroom, at home or in the community.

Nurses and social workers play a vital role in ensuring students with special health care needs can access educational services. We will discuss students’ health needs, rare genetic disorders and misconceptions about particular diagnoses. Additionally, this session will address how we can help staff overcome barriers and share case studies. Kevin O’Grady School’s mascot is a  chameleon because of our ability to adapt and change in order to meet students and families where they are at. Our school motto is every student, everyday, whatever it takes!

This session will provide participants with an overview of Augmentative and alternative communication methods as well as strategies for supporting communication interactions with non-speaking and minimally speaking communicators in order to promote active engagement and self-advocacy.

This session will provide a description of the different types of visual impairment and their impact on students with severe disabilities. We will discuss available services that may be needed by students with visual impairments. Because Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) is prevalent among students with severe disabilities, this category will be a focus, providing strategies and accommodations that could benefit students with CVI.

This session will provide participants with an overview of the collaborative nature PTs and OTs provide within a severe special needs classroom setting. This will include an overview of positioning, use of adaptive equipment, unique sensory needs, mobility challenges, and overall engagement in daily school based activities.
